Golfo Dulce Restoration- Costa Rica

Welcome to “Golfo Dulce Restoration” a regenerative project dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the ocean ecosystem in the captivating Golfo Dulce of Costa Rica. Nestled behind the Osa Peninsula, Golfo Dulce, or the ‘Sweet Gulf,’ is a haven where four rivers converge with the sea, and the lush jungle emerges from the water like the towering walls of a fortress. While the terrestrial rainforests are proudly protected by the Piedras Blancas and Corcovado National Parks, the underwater rainforests, the coral reefs, have been overlooked and neglected. These forgotten guardians are vital for the ocean’s health, serving as nurseries for microscopic life forms that give rise to majestic creatures such as humpback whales, dolphins, and sea turtles—creatures we’ve come to cherish.

The reefs play a crucial role by reducing wave energy, safeguarding mangroves and seagrass beds that filter water, prevent erosion, and foster biodiversity. Additionally, they provide a habitat for millions of sea life species, intricately weaving the fabric of the marine food chain.

Golfo Dulce has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the Ocean’s 20 wildest places and designated as one of the Oceans’ ‘Hope Spots’ by Mission Blue. Our mission is to safeguard this hope.

During the global coral bleaching event of 2015-2016, Golfo Dulce lost a staggering 75% of its coral. Rising temperatures and runoff continue to threaten the remaining corals. Fortunately, the surviving corals have shown signs of recovery, prompting our initiative to explore the genetic properties that enable this resilience through coral gardening. Our grassroots organization has initiated the first private coral gardening project in the bay, just outside our home. However, the success of this endeavor relies on collaboration with governmental bodies or universities. We strive to protect the roots of the seas, and with your support, we aim to expand our mission to preserve the hope embodied by Golfo Dulce, where various life forms converge to start anew.

The project commenced in March 2023 with the establishment of a coral nursery. By January 2024, we plan to transplant these corals to the seabed. To ensure their protection, we are planting mangroves along the shores where freshwater meets the sea. With increased support, we aspire to extend our efforts to seagrass planting.
Our mission is to regenerate the waters, creating a positive impact in this bay—a vital birthing ground for numerous marine animals. We warmly welcome any initiatives from individuals who share our dedication to helping the oceans thrive. Together, let’s contribute to the restoration and preservation of Golfo Dulce, fostering a future where marine life can flourish.

The Golfo Dulce Restoration Project blossoms from the heartfelt collaboration of dedicated environmental stewards. In partnership with Osa Ecology, Proyecto Corales, Karmakünste, Seeds of Love, Sur Conciente, Bird Tribe foundation and Saladero Eco Lodge.

Together, we unite our passion and expertise to nurture the delicate balance of Golfo Dulce’s ecosystem, fostering a future where nature thrives and our hearts resonate with its timeless beauty.
